War is hell. We’ve heard this adage with just about every war-themed film or documentary release, but the truth is most of us will never experience the ravages first-hand, God willing. For many of us, these horrible conflicts are nothing more than stories we read; movies we watch. But in fact war is drama we don’t need to fabricate because it has been all too real; just ask those that have taken part.
Perhaps no other war in history touched so many lives than the events of World War II. It was a time that ushered in many changes across the world, especially for the art of war. While tanks, machine guns, and other technological weapons of destruction had been used during the first World War, they didn’t show their true destructive power until the second worldwide conflict. This is one of the reasons that more than fifty-two million people lost their lives during both the European and Pacific Theaters of World War II. The invasion of Normandy alone saw nearly 30,000 US troops killed and 106,000 wounded or missing. War is hell…indeed.
So why would we want to relive the trying times of WWII in a videogame? The answer might be different for every gamer. Some folks are history buffs, other people simply like to shoot things. As for me…I like to think of it as a tribute to those men and women that died so that I can enjoy the life I have today. The problem is the majority of WWII-themed games have been more arcade like than an actual representation of how things actually were during that time. To that end I can honestly say that Ubisoft’s latest release, Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 is a TRUE tribute and the best WWII game to date.

Dynasty Warriors 5 - Xtreme Legends

These scenarios vary in difficulty, with some starting players out with a good-sized force while others require players to build up an army on their own. Generals control the main forces in battle, and players can give them a number of different orders to carry out. Players can select the officers of their attack force from over 200 available characters, and in addition to recruiting from neutral officers, players can also convince defeated opponents to join their side. The game also gives advanced players the ability to change game options. Players can change the number of officers they can use in battle, the time limit for battle, and change battle conditions, making the game easier or harder as needed. Dynasty Warriors 4

The fourth entry in Koei's action-packed Dynasty Warriors series presents a frustrating question: How many times can a company revisit the same gameplay concept, adding just enough features to please hard-core fans, and still get away with selling it as an entirely new game? With Dynasty Warriors 4, Koei is walking a fine line between updating a venerable franchise with valuable new features and simply milking a cash cow. True, the Dynasty Warriors games have met with commercial success both in Japan and North America, so clearly a lot of players are into this tried-and-true hack-and-slash formula. But for the casual gamers who are on the fence about whether or not to try yet another Dynasty Warriors game, the blatant sameness in the fourth installment will probably cause them to pass on it.
Dynasty Warriors still takes place in ancient China, beginning with the downfall of the Han dynasty. You start the campaign (or "musou") mode with one of three factions--Wu, Wei, or Shu--and engage in a series of branching battles that chronicle the turmoil that engulfed China during the latter Han. There's a classic piece of ancient Chinese literature about this period called Romance of the Three Kingdoms, so the story of this and all the other Dynasty Warriors games is indeed deeply rooted in historical fact. This adherence to history has always been one of the most appealing features of the series, but now that we're in the fourth iteration, it's starting to lose its luster. How many times can you really fight off the same Yellow Turban Rebellion or fight the same battle at Hu Lao Gate before you get tired of the whole thing? Dynasty Warriors 4 brings back many of the same characters as well, and though there's an almost absurd number of characters and alternate character models to unlock (creating ample replay value, for those who are into that sort of thing), the key figures in terms of the gameplay and plot remain more or less the same. To be fair, Koei's use of actual history as a storyline limits the liberties it can take with such things, but that doesn't make the game seem any less familiar.
The gameplay in Dynasty Warriors 4 will be familiar to anyone who's played the previous entries in the series. After choosing your faction, you then choose from among several officers to go out and wage war with. The actual missions are as fast-paced and chaotic as ever, with literally hundreds of friendly and opposing soldiers running back and forth in the midst of battle. All the available playable characters are of the superhuman variety--their attacks can lay out literally 10 or 20 foes at once, and as always, it's pretty amusing to see a whole pile of bodies flying like rag dolls before the swath of your sword. All the characters have a basic combo attack that can be improved on with experience, and they can increase their stats in a number of other areas too. Items picked up during battle will also help you out, as you can equip them between missions for added effects later. In a welcome change to the musou mode, you can now change characters between missions, so you're not stuck playing the same officer throughout an entire nation's campaign.
Thankfully, Dynasty Warriors 4 does bring a few minor new features to the table. Like the previous game, Dynasty Warriors 3 Xtreme Legends, Dynasty Warriors 4 offers edit modes for both bodyguards, who protect you in battle, and officers, whom you can control directly in battle. However, the changeable aspects consist mostly of superficial features like gender and garb, so it's up to you to actively improve a new character after he or she is created. You'll notice a couple of minor new features in the battles, too. For one, an enemy officer will occasionally challenge you to a one-on-one duel, and if you accept, you and your foe will enter into a fight unencumbered by surrounding troops. Another new battle element is the addition of siege engines. For instance, your forces may be moving a battering ram toward a fortified enemy gate, and you'll have to protect the ram from enemy forces while it's being made ready to sunder the doors. Finally, and perhaps most notably, your officer can gain weapon experience independent of his or her stats, which increases the character's overall proficiency in combat. These features are nice to see, but they provide only marginal enhancement to a gameplay model that's identical to its forebears.
The series' graphics and sound haven't been improved in any appreciable way since the last game, though they were good to begin with. The frame rate during battle is constantly fluid, and presumably Koei has kept the level of detail consistent throughout the series so as to maintain this smoothness. The character models look good, with a nice amount of detail and decent animation, but as usual, the backgrounds are pretty sparse, often consisting of simple planes and basic buildings. The sound effects are serviceable, but they're pretty much indistinguishable from the effects featured in the previous game. As expected, the voice acting carries on the series' campy tradition, and it's mostly of the quality you'd expect to hear in a dubbed kung fu movie. Surprisingly, the soundtrack is actually a little more varied, when compared with its predecessors. Although the standard '80s-style wailing guitar rock is back, some of the music (mostly in the menu screens) has a more ambient feel to it. This is definitely a welcome change, as it makes you less inclined to bang your head constantly throughout gameplay.

FIFA Street 2

European Football purists aren't likely to enjoy FIFA Street 2 any more than they did the first game in the series. Like its predecessor, this is an arcade-style game in tune with EA's other alternative sports titles, such as NBA Street. As such, it's more about flashy tricks than the actual game of soccer, although it's entertaining enough for what it is. The artificial intelligence is improved and ball physics are much more realistic than in the first game, but while FIFA Street 2 makes a good first impression, it gets bogged down by unresponsive player controls and repetitive action.

Part of the great initial impression is the exhaustive player creation utility that lets you customize your player from a variety of options, as well as detail your home pitch with enough details to make it interesting. Granted, the pitch editor isn't as full-fledged as it could be, but the result can be as downtrodden as you want, even if the forced grittiness of it is sometimes hard to swallow. You can't adjust its size and shape, so aside from cosmetics, there's no real value in one pitch over another. Your players, however, have adjustable stats in speed, tricks, and so forth. And while your player and pitch may look as downtrodden as you like, as the game wears on, you'll notice it pretends to be more urban than it really is, like a guy in the Hamptons claiming he grew up on the streets.

Once you're finished, you take control of a four-man soccer team that competes against similar teams with a fascinating mishmash of fictional street players and actual soccer stars. A lot of popular stars from around the world are curiously absent, although in the end, it matters little: you don't play a lot of soccer in FIFA Street 2. Instead, your goal is to string together tricks, and there are plenty more of them this time around. Pulling them off is intuitive, thanks to the use of the right analog stick, which serves as both an offensive tool and performs defensive tackles. Winning isn't just a matter of scoring goals, which is more often than not your secondary mission, since several modes don't even require goals, instead focusing on trick points.

The smoother aspect of the controls is completely at odds with the defensive gamebreaker moves, which work well when you're successful -- but start a string of frustrating and uncontrollable animations when you aren't. Should you counter the offensive player with the right move, you take control of the ball, and in turn, get to enjoy the better parts of the game. Should you aim in the wrong direction (and it's always a crapshoot, since you are simply playing the odds), you get stuck for a few seconds waiting for your player to finish the fake-out animation. There are other defensive moves, of course, but they only require some button mashing and miss the finesse of the better offensive juggles and shots. The result? It's easy -- and preferable -- to beat your defenders and stay on the offensive as often as you can. Too bad playing defense just isn't much fun. You can take manual control over your goalie, although this isn't as interesting or as helpful as it sounds.

You'll have to master as many tricks as you can, thanks to the varied modes, which may award points for certain tricks like the panna (more commonly known as the nutmeg), or for making gamebreaker goals. The biggest issue with that is that while the varied modes sound great on paper, in practice, it's too predictable to stay interesting. Outplaying AI defensive opponents is all too easy until you get to the goalie, who is brilliant one moment and harebrained the next, depending on the complexity of the combo you built the shot from. Whether your mission is to perform nutmegs or goals, the standard match ends up being a bunch of juggling moves, some passes, a bunch of trick moves, and a shot at the goal. In fact, the juggling is the best part of the game, although you wouldn't know it from the excruciating juggling challenges, which play like a dumbed down version of Dance Dance Revolution.

In the fall of 2001, South Korean moviegoers were inundated with a series of successful action comedies, many of which took the old standard of Asian cinema, the gangster, and dropped them into absurd 'fish out of water' situations, invoking hilarity out of what are usually mundane cinematic set pieces. "My Wife is a Gangster (Jopog manura)" featured a female crime boss getting in touch with her feminine side in order to find a husband. In "Hi, Dharma", a bunch of gangsters on the lam find refuge in a Buddhist monastery, while Kim Sang-jin's follow-up to "Attack the Gas Station (Chuyuso supgyuk sa keun)", "Kick the Moon (Shinlaui dalbam)", has a big boss and a schoolteacher vying for the affections of the same woman. In the case of the recent multi-region DVD import "My Boss, My Hero (Doosaboo ilchae)", a mob boss is sent back to high school, a place that ends up being far worse than life on the mean streets.

Kye Doo-sik (Jung Joon-ho, who is usually associated with more serious action fare, such as "The Siren" and "Last Witness") is the second-in-command of a mob gang. Though he has successfully expanded his boss' territory by defeating a rival gang, he is prevented from moving up in the criminal organization due to his lack of a high school diploma. It seems that all his contemporaries have at least a high school education, with some having even attended college, and Doo-sik's lack of formal education is downright embarrassing-- he is even oblivious to the existence of the Internet and has yet to discover what an e-mail address is. Thus, Doo-sik is given an ultimatum by his boss (Kim Sang-joong)-- he must go back to school and graduate if he wants to continue as a gangster.

With the help of his underlings Kim Sang-do (Jeong Wung-in of "The Foul King") and the dim-witted Dae Ka-ri (Jeong Un-taek of "Friend"), Doo-sik poses as a 20-year old student and enrolls at a privately run high school. Unfortunately, he quickly learns that high school life is far rougher and tougher than the life he has left behind. In addition to being beaten by his teachers and robbed by the school bully, Doo-sik quickly learns that the school is rife with corruption. The parents of rich students routinely bribe the school's principal, who in turn coerces the teaching staff into awarding good marks. The principal is also behind the school's problem in retaining female teachers, as he routinely sexual harasses them. Unfortunately, there is little anyone can do about this situation, as the principal is backed up by a local mob. Doo-sik also learns that the lure of getting into a top college is so strong that some students are willing to do anything, as with the case of Yoon-joo (Oh Seung-eun), a female student he befriends, who prostitutes herself after school to pay for her education. Fed up with the corruption and injustice all around him, Doo-sik decides to take matters into his own hands, which leads to an all-out battle on school grounds.

The first half of "My Boss, My Hero" is clearly a 'fish out of water' comedy, as Doo-sik is knocked to the bottom of the food chain at his new school. Coupled with the ineptness of Ka-ri, who consistently gives Doo-sik bad advice about how to fit into his new environment, there are more than a few well-earned chuckles to be had. In addition, the film makes some pointed comments about the brutality of the Korean education system, a sometimes-dangerous place where corporal punishment still exists and the pressure to perform leads to all sorts of abuses and criminal behavior (apparently, the story is loosely based on an actual incident at a Seoul high school). Unfortunately, there are a number of instances where the script strains credibility, such as Doo-sik being bullied by the local toughs, particularly since he easily stands a head taller than them and is almost a decade their senior. In addition, this first half also suffers from some choppy editing, which makes a number of the scene transitions particularly jarring.

However, the film really takes off in the second half, where the story sheds the laughs and presents Doo-sik's heart-wrenching struggle to help the teachers and students overthrow the school's corrupt administration. As the principal's underworld connections arrive to break up a peaceful protest, director Yun Je-gyun pulls no punches in showing the brutality that ensues. In addition, the film's second half also features a beautifully rendered fight sequence that takes place in a torrential downpour, reminiscent of the opening action sequence in "My Wife is a Gangster".

From Kim Tae Kyun, the director of Volcano High comes an amusing fish-out-of-water romance starring Hyun Bin, from My Lovely Sam Soon and Lee Yeon Hee.

Jae Kyung is a spoilt rich kid and a bit of a slacker. He is in his senior year at high school, but rarely bothers showing up to class. It's not that he has no desire for success, it's just that he knows he doesn't have to study hard in order to get it. On his nineteenth birthday he will become a millionaire, thanks to his late grandfather's inheritance. But, the day before the big pay out, Jae Kyung's family lawyer discovers a hidden clause in the contract. Jae Kyung can only inherit his fortune if he graduates from Boram High School. Where? Exactly!

Boram is in a remote part of the Korean countryside, miles from Jae Kyung's cushy little existence. So the pampered city boy has no choice but to up-sticks and move to this small rural community - where his credit card isn't accepted anywhere and he can't even drive his sports car! But, in amongst all the country bumpkins and backward yokels, Jae Kyung meets Eun Hwan (Lee Yeon Hee) in whom he sees something different, something special, something which might possibly inspire him to change his selfish, arrogant ways and become a better person.
